HaverSchmidt heeft zijn leven lang de grimmige humor van tegenpool Paaltjens nodig gehad om zijn melancholie de baas te blijven. In hun studententijd is de balans optimaal. Er wordt gelachen en gedronken, het Io Vivat klinkt over de grachten en de poëzieproductie leidt tot de bestseller Snikken en Grimlachjes. Na het afstuderen eindigt de innige vriendschap en moet HaverSchmidt serieus aan de slag in het eenzame beroep van predikant. Zonder de humor van Paaltjens lijkt de melancholie in de preken van HaverSchmidt hard toe te slaan.

In het libretto zijn het levensverhaal van HaverSchmidt en de gedichten van Paaltjens op een associatieve manier met elkaar verweven om samen met de steeds verrassende invalshoek van de muziek vat te krijgen op deze bijzondere twee-eenheid. Regisseur Bart Vieveen schreef het libretto op basis van preken, verhaalfragmenten en gedichten van HaverSchmidt en Huub de Vriend componeerde de muziek erbij. Hannah Ybeles Smit en Jeroen Manders geven gestalte aan Piet Paaltjens en François HaverSchmidt.

Huub de Vriend (1954) is componist, pianist en muziekdocent. Hij is de oprichter van ensemble Street Fable en richtte samen met Rolf Delfos De Componeerfabriek op. De Vriend staat bekend om zijn educatieve composities, zoals "De Rim Ram Suite", en zijn pianowerken, waaronder de preludecyclus "Vogelvlucht".

Composer and neighbor Huub de Vriend transformed Piet Paaltjens' famous Snikken en Grimlachjes ('Sobs and Grimaces') into a musical theater piece. The play tells a heartbreaking story. François HaverSchmidt and Piet Paaltjens resemble the alter egos about whom Schubert composed *Der Doppelgänger* and Stevenson wrote *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde*.

Throughout his life, HaverSchmidt has needed the grim humor of his opposite, Paaltjens, to keep his melancholy at bay. During their student years, the balance is optimal. There is laughter and drinking, the Io Vivat resounds across the canals, and the production of poetry leads to the bestseller *Sobs and Grimaces*. After graduation, the close friendship ends, and HaverSchmidt must seriously set to work in the solitary profession of minister. Without Paaltjens' humor, the melancholy in HaverSchmidt's sermons seems to hit hard.

In the libretto, HaverSchmidt's life story and Paaltjens' poems are interwoven in an associative way to capture this unique duality, together with the ever-surprising perspective of the music. Director Bart Vieveen wrote the libretto based on sermons, story fragments, and poems by HaverSchmidt, and Huub de Vriend composed the music. Hannah Ybeles Smit and Jeroen Manders portray Piet Paaltjens and François HaverSchmidt.

Huub de Vriend (1954) is a composer, pianist, and music teacher. He is the founder of the ensemble Street Fable and founded De Componeerfabriek together with Rolf Delfos. De Vriend is known for his educational compositions, such as "The Rim Ram Suite", and his piano works, including the prelude cycle "Vogelvlucht".
