Lecture in Matilo Park: Who doesn't love honey?
English follows the Dutch text
Lecture in Matilo Park: Who doesn't love honey? What do Matilo Park and Rome have in common? Bees! And the person who knows a great deal about this is beekeeper and Archeon volunteer Henk van den Bos. He looks forward to telling you all about it during his lecture on Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2026, at the Fabrica visitor center in the heart of Matilo Park (Leiden). And since he knows there are plenty of other honey lovers out there, there will also be a small honey tasting.
The lecture starts at 1:30 PM and is free of charge. It will take place outdoors if the weather is nice, or inside the (small) Fabrica building otherwise. Registration is required via info@parkmatilo.nl.
Honey—delicious! It seems the Romans absolutely loved honey. They often ate it with bread for breakfast. But they also mixed it with sour ingredients—sounds unappealing? If you could afford it, you drank honey-based beverages, too. Beyond food and drink, honey served other purposes—such as making money. Experienced beekeeper Henk van den Bos is the perfect person to reveal the secrets of the Romans and their honey. He has spent years delving into the history and uses of honey, knows all sorts of fascinating facts, and loves sharing them with others.
Tastes differ Did you know that honey comes in various flavors? Henk will explain why that is—and you can even taste the difference yourself!
