Lol met Romeinse spelletjes in fort Matilo! / Fun with Roman games in Fort Matilo!
09.08.2026 : Ken jij ‘Mola’ al? Of Trigon? Bikkelen misschien? Niet? Dit zijn allemaal Romeinse spelletjes die je kunt spelen in park Matilo in Leiden. Ook Rota en dobbelen staan op het programma. Het is voor kinderen én volwassenen leuk. En soms een uitdaging ;-).

Iedereen speelde spellen
In de Romeinse tijd speelden mensen – inclusief slaven - ook spelletjes, net als wij. In huis, op straat of in het badhuis. Soms tekenden ze het Molenspel in het zand en speelden ze met witte en zwarte steentjes. Had je meer geld dan liet je een mooi bord in hout maken. Met zwarte en witte glazen stenen, prachtig. Romeinse mannen waren blijkbaar gek op bordspelen zoals een spel dat lijkt op backgammon.
Matilo-vrijwilliger Frank vertelde dat hij Mola ook kent, maar dan als het Molenspel. Dat werd vroeger heel veel gespeeld. Net als bikkelen, een behendigheidsspel met schapenbotjes. Die kon je gewoon bij de slager gaan halen. In Mongolië bijvoorbeeld staat dat nog steeds in de top 3 van favoriete spellen! In Nederland al lang niet meer maar wie weet vind jij het wel zo leuk dat je het wel vaker spelen wil!
Een ander spel dat we ook tegenwoordig nog kennen, werd in de Romeinse tijd ook al gespeeld: Schaken. Ludus Latrunculorum noemden zij het. Hoewel het niet helemaal hetzelfde is als tegenwoordig is het principe van het spel hetzelfde gebleven.

Everyone played games In Roman times, people - including slaves - also played games, just like us. At home, on the street or in the bathhouse. Sometimes they drew the Mill Game in the sand and played with white and black stones. If you had more money, you had a beautiful sign made in wood. With black and white glass stones, beautiful. Roman men were apparently fond of board games such as a game similar to backgammon.
Matilo volunteer Frank said that he also knows Mola, but as the Mill Game. That was played a lot in the past. Just like brick-and-mortar, a game of skill with sheep bones. You could just get it from the butcher. In Mongolia, for example, it is still in the top 3 of favorite games! Not in the Netherlands for a long time, but who knows, you might like it so much that you'll want to play it more often!
Another game that we still know today was also played in Roman times: Chess. Ludus Latrunculorum they called it. Although it is not exactly the same as today, the principle of the game has remained the same.
