15.04.2026 : Stichting Mooi Matilo organiseert op zondagmiddag 19 april een middag vol plezier, activiteit en verhalen rond het Romeinse soldatenleven.English follows the Dutch text
In en rond de Fabrica in park Matilo kan iedereen er op een laagdrempelige manier leren boogschieten, katapult schieten en Latijnse woorden seinen. Rondleiders vertellen daarnaast over de soldaten in het fort, hun leven te midden van de lokale bevolking, de jacht (ja, ze moesten wel eten he) en nog meer. Misschien wil je wel een spelletje bikkelen doen!
De activiteit is gratis en is te bezoeken tussen 13 en ca. 16 uur.
Vanaf ca. 14.30 uur gaan vier groepen handboogschutters van Handboogvereniging Sagittatus uit Leiden onderling de strijd aan. Ze schieten op (afbeeldingen van) o.a. konijnen, dassen, hert en wolf.

Nationaal Weekend van het Verdedigingserfgoed
In het weekend van 18 en 19 april vindt in heel het land het Weekend van het Verdedigingserfgoed plaats. Eeuwenlang zorgden forten, bunkers, vestingen en linies voor de verdediging van ons land. Samen vormen zij het verdedigingserfgoed in Nederland. In dit weekend worden er honderden boeiende bouwwerken opengesteld tijdens het Nationaal Weekend van het Verdedigingserfgoed. Roman Fort Matilo on the defensive!
Stichting Mooi Matilo is organizing an afternoon full of fun, activities, and stories about Roman soldier life on Sunday afternoon, April 19. In and around the Fabrica in Matilo Park, everyone can learn archery, catapult shooting, and signaling Latin words in an accessible way. Guides will also talk about the soldiers in the fort, their life among the local population, hunting (yes, they had to eat, right?), and more. Perhaps you would like to play a game of knucklebone!
The activity is free and can be visited between 1:00 PM and approximately 4:00 PM.
From approximately 2:30 PM, four groups of archers from the Sagittatus Archery Club in Leiden will compete against each other. They will shoot at (images of) rabbits, badgers, deer, and wolves, among others.
National Defence Heritage Weekend
The Defence Heritage Weekend takes place throughout the country on the weekend of April 18 and 19. For centuries, forts, bunkers, fortifications, and lines ensured the defence of our country. Together, they form the defence heritage in the Netherlands. During this weekend, hundreds of fascinating structures will be open to the public during the National Defence Heritage Weekend.
