De kinderen van de groepen acht van de St. Josephschool hadden de bijeenkomst voorbereid met het maken van gedichten en het oefenen van het lied “Mag ik dan bij jou”.
Er waren in totaal 90 kinderen, enkelen van hen lazen gedichten voor en noemden de namen van de kinderen die weggevoerd waren en hun verzorgers. Die werden naar Westerbork gebracht en daarna op transport gezet naar Auschwitz. Waar de meesten van hen zijn omgekomen.
De bijeenkomst eindigde met het zingen van het lied “Mag ik dan bij jou” door alle 90 kinderen, dat was heel mooi en roerend. Na het zeggen van de Kaddish, door de heer Levi, het Joodse gebed voor overledenen eindigde de bijeenkomst met het leggen van een steentje of een bloem bij en op de stenen koffer die als herinnering aan de wegvoering vóór het voormalige weeshuis staat.
De herdenking wordt elk jaar georganiseerd door de stichting Jodenvervolging Leiden, in samenwerking met het bestuur van de wijkvereniging en de St. Josephschool.
Commemoration of the deportation of children from the Jewish Orphanage, March 17, 1943
The annual commemoration of the deportation of the children and their caregivers from the Jewish Orphanage on Roodenburgerstraat (now a health center) was impressive once again.
The children from the eighth-grade classes of the St. Joseph School had prepared for the gathering by writing poems and practicing the song “Mag ik dan bij jou” (May I then be with you).
There were a total of 90 children; some of them read poems and mentioned the names of the children who had been deported and their caregivers. They were taken to Westerbork and subsequently put on transport to Auschwitz, where most of them perished.
The gathering concluded with all 90 children singing the song “Mag ik dan bij jou”; it was very beautiful and moving. After the recitation of the Kaddish by Mr. Levi—the Jewish prayer for the deceased—the gathering concluded with the laying of a stone or a flower at and on the stone chest that stands in front of the former orphanage as a memorial to the deportation.
The commemoration is organized every year by the Leiden Foundation for the Persecution of Jews, in collaboration with the board of the neighborhood association and the St. Joseph School.
