Stilstaan of in beweging komen / Standing still or starting to move

14.12.2025 : Opeens valt het beeld stil; Hans is bevroren. We horen hem niet meer. De verbinding is verbroken. Ik zit in een online-overleg over de energietransitie. Lot, een jonge vrouw die superactief is in haar wijk, benadrukt dat het allemaal nog veel te langzaam gaat.

Overstromingen, droogte, bosbranden, honger: we moeten de klimaatverandering zo snel mogelijk aanpakken. Zeker in de rijke Westerse wereld, waar we met z’n allen het meeste hebben bijgedragen aan het broeikaseffect. Hans, een wat oudere man, die als bestuurslid zijn eigen wijkvereniging vertegenwoordigt, is minder enthousiast. Hij had net gezegd dat we niet moeten overdrijven met de energietransitie. Voor hem moet het allemaal wel betaalbaar blijven. Veel mensen hebben andere zorgen dan het klimaat. Misschien zijn er over een paar jaar wel betere technieken. En hij heeft gehoord dat die warmtepompen best wat geluid maken. En toen viel zijn beeld dus stil.

Met de andere deelnemers gaat het gesprek verder. Lot zegt dat ze de argumenten van Hans goed begrijpt, maar dat dat geen reden mag zijn om de energietransitie te vertragen. Sterker nog, we kunnen verwachten dat de ‘oude’ krachten, die belang hebben bij hoe het nu gaat, zich verzetten tegen de noodzakelijke vernieuwing. De tabaksindustrie is tegen een rookvrije samenleving: logisch, maar dat is geen reden om te blijven roken. Wilders wil niet dat men doorheeft dat asielmigratie maar een betrekkelijk klein probleem is waar beleid amper invloed op heeft. En natuurlijk zitten (de financiers van) de wapenindustrie niet te wachten op vrede in het Midden-Oosten. Is dat een reden om niks te doen? Natuurlijk niet.

In het overleg maken we goede afspraken met elkaar. We delen ideeën over wat werkt: bewonersgroepen ondersteunen om samen plannen te maken om van het gas af te gaan. Een warmtecamera uitlenen, zodat mensen kunnen zien waar ’s winters de meeste warmte uit hun huis ontsnapt. Deelauto-projecten opzetten met elektrische auto’s. Plantaardig-koken-workshops organiseren, ruilmarkten houden, en respectvol blijven als je met een klimaatscepticus het gesprek aangaat.

De hapering van Hans is voorbij. Hij is weer terug in de meeting. De voorzitter legt geduldig uit dat we zijn bezwaren goed begrijpen, maar dat het geen reden is om niet aan de slag te gaan. Even lijkt het alsof het beeld weer bevriest, maar langzaam zie ik Hans ontdooien. Het hoeft allemaal niet zo snel en mensen moeten het wel kunnen meemaken. Maar dat er iets nodig is, ja, dat ziet hij nu ook wel. Het is een mooi beeld: Hans die even was blijven steken in het verleden, terwijl de tijd en de jeugd verder zijn gegaan. Hans beweegt weer. Samen gaan we op weg naar een groene, duurzame toekomst. En laten we daarbij niet wachten maar nu in beweging komen.

Standing still or starting to move
Suddenly, the screen goes silent; Hans is frozen. We can't hear him anymore. The connection is broken. I'm in an online meeting about the energy transition. Lot, a young woman who is extremely active in her neighborhood, emphasizes that everything is still moving far too slowly.

Floods, droughts, forest fires, hunger: we must tackle climate change as quickly as possible. Especially in the wealthy Western world, where we have collectively contributed most to the greenhouse effect. Hans, a somewhat older man who represents his own neighborhood association as a board member, is less enthusiastic. He had just said that we shouldn't overdo the energy transition. For him, it all has to remain affordable. Many people have concerns other than the climate. Perhaps in a few years, there will be better technology. And he's heard that those heat pumps are quite noisy. And then his screen went silent.

The conversation continues with the other participants. Lot says she understands Hans's arguments, but that shouldn't be a reason to delay the energy transition. In fact, we can expect the "old" forces, those with vested interests in the current state of affairs, to oppose the necessary innovation. The tobacco industry opposes a smoke-free society: understandable, but that's no reason to keep smoking. Wilders doesn't want people to realize that asylum migration is a relatively minor issue that policy has little influence on. And of course, (the financiers of) the arms industry aren't interested in peace in the Middle East. Is that a reason to do nothing? Of course not.

In consultations, we make sound agreements with each other. We share ideas about what works: supporting residents' groups to make joint plans to transition off gas. Lending a thermal imaging camera so people can see where the most heat escapes from their homes in winter. Setting up car-sharing projects with electric cars. Organizing plant-based cooking workshops, holding swap meets, and remaining respectful when engaging in conversation with a climate skeptic.

Hans's hesitation is over. He's back in the meeting. The chair patiently explains that we understand his concerns, but that they're no reason not to get started. For a moment, it seems as if the scene freezes again, but slowly I see Hans thawing. It doesn't all have to happen so quickly, and people should be able to experience it. But yes, he now sees that something is needed. It's a beautiful image: Hans, stuck in the past for a while, while time and youth have moved on. Hans is moving again. Together we are on the road to a green, sustainable future. And let's not wait, but take action now.
