Polderpark Cronesteyn krijgt monumentenstatus / Polderpark Cronesteyn given monument status

17.11.2025 : het college van B&W Leiden heeft op 11 November 2025 besloten de monumenten status te verlenen aan Polderpark Cronesteyn.

Stichting Groen Cronesteyn en de Historische Vereniging Oud Leiden (HVOL) hebben de monumentenstatus voor het park gezamenlijk onderzocht en de monumenten status voorgesteld, om de natuurwaarden en het historisch erfgoed te beschermen. Want het polderpark is uniek en waardevol.

Stichting Groen Cronesteyn is opgericht om Polderpark Cronesteyn te beschermen. En dat bleek nodig, door wegenaanleg dat stukjes park weg snoepte, en het vinden van natuurvriendelijke recreatie. Voor bescherming van Cronesteyn vonden vonden wij al gauw een medestander in de Historische Vereniging Oud Leiden. Sophie Visser van HVOL deed uitgebreid historisch onderzoek wat resulteerde in juli 2023 in een monumenten aanvraag aan wethouder Yvonne van Delft. Die nu is toegekend.

Cronesteyn heeft een rijke en waardevolle historie, als woonplaats en polderlandschap. Sporen van bewoning en gebruik van de polder zijn gevonden vanaf 1300 en zelfs eerder. Het grootste deel van Cronesteyn bestaat uit middeleeuws landschap. De eerste windwatermolen in Holland werd door polderbewoner Heer Floris van Alkemade gerealiseerd rond 1408. In wat nu het landgoedbos in Cronesteyn is, stond een kasteel dat rond 1600, na verwoesting tijdens het Beleg van Leiden, werd herbouwd. De bochtige kreken en onregelmatige slotenpatronen uit de geschiedenis zijn nog steeds te vinden.

In 1975 verwierf de Gemeente Leiden het park. In de jaren ‘80 kreeg het park zijn huidige ontwerp als recreatiegebied voor alle Leidenaren. Nog steeds is er veel bijzondere natuur te vinden in Cronesteyn, en blijft het een levend landschap. En nu is de toekomst van Polderpark Cronesteyn gewaarborgd als historisch natuurmonument. Stichting Groen Cronesteyn blijft zich inzetten voor bescherming en verbetering van natuur en landschap in Polderpark Cronesteyn.

Polderpark Cronesteyn given monument status
On November 11, 2025, the Leiden Municipal Executive decided to grant Cronesteyn Polderpark monument status. The Groen Cronesteyn Foundation and the Historical Association of Old Leiden (HVOL) jointly investigated the park's monument status and proposed it to protect its natural values and historical heritage. The polder park is unique and valuable.

The Groen Cronesteyn Foundation was established to protect Cronesteyn Polderpark. This proved necessary due to road construction that was eroding parts of the park and the need to find nature-friendly recreation opportunities. We soon found an ally in the Historical Association of Old Leiden to protect Cronesteyn. Sophie Visser of HVOL conducted extensive historical research, which resulted in a monument application to Alderman Yvonne van Delft in July 2023. This application has now been granted.

Cronesteyn has a rich and valuable history, both as a residential area and as a polder landscape. Traces of habitation and use of the polder have been found from 1300 and even earlier. Most of Cronesteyn consists of a medieval landscape. The first windmill in Holland was built by polder resident Lord Floris van Alkemade around 1408. In what is now the estate forest in Cronesteyn, a castle once stood, which was rebuilt around 1600 after being destroyed during the Siege of Leiden. The winding creeks and irregular ditch patterns from history can still be seen. In 1975, the Municipality of Leiden acquired the park. In the 1980s, the park received its current design as a recreational area for all Leiden residents. Much of Cronesteyn's unique natural beauty can still be found, and it remains a vibrant landscape.

And now the future of Cronesteyn Polder Park is guaranteed as a historical nature monument. The Groen Cronesteyn Foundation continues to work to protect and improve the nature and landscape in Cronesteyn Polderpark.
