11.06.2025 : In het zomerconcert van het LEC staat het streven naar vrede centraal. Persoonlijke vrede, politieke vrede, of vechten voor vrede. Maar ook gaat het over herinneringen aan de tijd dat het geen vrede was, waardoor je eens te meer beseft wat een bofferd je bent als je in vrede leeft.
English follows the Dutch text Op het programma van het zomerconcert op 28 juni in de Maria Middelareskerk in Leiden staan composities uit vijf eeuwen over vrede en het verlangen ernaar.

In het oudste werk, ‘La Guerre’ van Janequin staat de tegenhanger, de oorlog centraal. Het is een 15de eeuws ‘hoorspel’ waarin je de kogels om je oren hoort fluiten. Een groot contrast met het indringende ‘Peace’ van Adam Paltrowitz op een tekst van Sara Teasdale. De Engelse componist Hubert Parry schreef de ‘Songs of Farewell’ toen een aantal van zijn getalenteerde leerlingen omkwamen in de loopgraven van de eerste wereldoorlog. De ‘Mauthausencyclus’ van Mikis Theodorakis, gaat over de ontberingen in het concentratiekamp. Liesbeth List vertolkte deze liederen – vertaald in het Nederlands - in de jaren zestig. De composities van Brahms en Whitacre weerspiegelen de rust en veiligheid waar iedereen uiteindelijk naar op zoek is.

Leiden English Choir summer concert ‘Peace in Pieces’
The LEC summer concert focuses on the pursuit of peace. Personal peace, political peace, or fighting for peace. But it also deals with memories of the time when there was no peace, which makes you realize once again how lucky you are to live in peace. The program of the summer concert on June 28 in the Maria Middelareskerk in Leiden includes compositions from five centuries about peace and the desire for it.

The oldest work, ‘La Guerre’ by Janequin focuses on the counterpart, war. It is a 15th century ‘radio play’ in which you hear bullets whistling around your ears. A great contrast with the penetrating ‘Peace’ by Adam Paltrowitz with a text by Sara Teasdale. The English composer Hubert Parry wrote the ‘Songs of Farewell’ when a number of his talented students died in the trenches of the First World War. The ‘Mauthausen cycle’ by Mikis Theodorakis is about the hardships in the concentration camp. Liesbeth List performed these songs – translated into Dutch – in the sixties. The compositions by Brahms and Whitacre reflect the peace and security that everyone is ultimately looking for.
